The NEU’s The Full Story resources for early years and primary age children aim to promote disability inclusion through reading; while the union’s disability equality toolkit is designed to be used by NEU workplace reps to support disabled members.
Here are five actions you can take this #DisabilityHistoryMonth to promote disability inclusion in the curriculum and bargain for disability equality in the workplace:
1. Hold a workplace meeting
Meet with NEU members in your school/college and use the NEU Disability Equality Toolkit to improve your workplace.
2. Share the self-ID campaign video
Watch the NEU Self-ID video to find out why it is so important for disabled members to self-identify on their NEU account.
3. Use the social model
People are disabled not by their impairment or difference but by barriers in society. More information on how to use the social model to bargain for disability equality can be found on the NEU Disability Equality Toolkit
4. Improve the curriculum
Promote disability inclusion through reading to make sure every child sees themselves represented positively in their school. The NEU’s The Full Story resources for early years and primary age children
5. Learn your history
The theme for this year’s Disability History Month is Disability Livelihood and Employment. Visit ukdhm.org for more information and resources.
